Israel's detention of healthcare workers forms part of a wider strategy to dismantle Gaza's healthcare system. 1,700+ healthcare workers have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 and all of Gaza's hospitals have been damaged or destroyed.

800+ doctors and medical professionals across the UK say that this is evidence of genocidal intent when considered alongside Israel's broader actions in Gaza.

Healthcare workers and facilities are supposed to be protected under international law. We therefore urge the UK Government to:

1. Publicly demand the immediate release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and use all economic, political, and diplomatic tools at its disposal to secure his release.

2. Pending his release, demand that he be granted immediate access to adequate medical care and independent monitors, including the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC).

3. Ensure accountability for violations of international law, including through supporting the International Criminal Court investigation and ensuring compliance with the International Court of Justice.

ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan stated that Israel threatened his wife and children if he continued pursuing arrest warrants against its leaders accused of committing genocide.

In an interview with Al Arabiya English, Khan said that a 5,000-page report issued by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services cleared him of any wrongdoing. He added that the ICC Bureau, the court’s main oversight body, appointed three judges to review the report, and they confirmed on 21 March 2026 that there was no evidence indicating any misconduct.

He also said that he had not fully understood the extent of influence held by governments and states he described as aligned with the US and Israel, noting that 12 US senators contacted him and threatened his family if he continued pursuing action against Israel.
