On November 17, Shelby students visited the Ohio State poultry industry learning day in the animal science wing of Ohio State University. Representatives from Trillium Farms, Cooler Farms, New Day Farms, and Ohio State spoke on the industry opportunities and difficulties.
Speakers also talked about the Ohio States Poultry science degree. Afterwards, the students were led in a poultry necropsy. The students learned many things on this rapidly growing industry, and had a blast while doing so. Thank you so much to all those who led this event!
Congratulations to Haley and Kaitlyn Evans for earning the highest honor in FFA, the American Degree! Both received their awards at this years National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. @haleyevans97 & @Kaitlyn_Evans16
Then long hours after school, students help local farmers harvest our grain and plant a cover crop. As well as run the manure spreader over the field to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Finally, the calves are feed again around 7pm.
A day of an FFA student- starting at 7am freshmen go out to the barn and feed our 2 calves. The goal is to expose underclassmen to taking care of animals to hopefully make them want to take a project. At 9:30 members went out to the Cookeโs Farm and helped unload 85,000 chicks!
The Shelby FFA would like to give a huge thanks to Schroeder Grain Farms who helped us harvest and haul our grain, Finnegan Farms who donated their time and equipment to plant our experimental fields cover crop and to Gwirtz Market who donated the seed for our cover crop. Thanks!
We would also like to spread awareness to our community and challenge them as well to buy local dairy products and donate at least one gallon of milk to the Shelby Helpline. Good Luck!
