It's a shame, really, because it's an excellent translation, and Wilson's notes (both in-text and through external sources like interviews, substack, etc.) make for genuinely interesting thinking.
Wilson's real 'sin' is that she paid particular attention to marginalised characters within the text (and was marketed on that basis), enraging that particular breed of terminally-online bigot who thrives on imagined notions of tradition and longing for a non-existent past.
There's also rumbling about "modern language" and "accuracy", which has no real relevance given that every translation is guilty of the same. Fitzgerald, Fagles and Lawrence in particular just added things according to their respective styles and the literary fashion of the time.
So much of the criticism levied at Wilson's translation of the Odyssey seems to be that alternative translations boast more "beautiful" or "epic" language, which is honestly one of the most "I curate my bookshelf to look smart" takes I've ever seen.
Everyone's always asking, "Would you still love me if I was a hamster? Would you still love me if I was a worm?" Forget that. Would you still love me if I was Odysseus, King of Ithaca, returning after a 20 year absence?
@keewa Lembit's out here, fighting the good fight by aggressively interrogating retail workers until they admit they're putting government mind-control nanites in the gouda.
Safety tools like this are a useful and commonplace part of TTRPG play, and knee-jerk opposition to their inclusion just demonstrates that you're not a safe person to have at the table.
Had to see it for myself. It's true: the new edition of the D&D Dungeon Master's Guide encourages players to raise their arms in an "X" if they are triggered by any in-game content.
