10 thoughts that define what great coaches do.
It all matters.
1. STANDARDS
Standards Matter.
- They set the Bar.
- They set the Tone.
Standards are clear and known by all in championship programs.
"The expectations are what they are here, and we don't run around talking about them."
2. MEDIOCRITY
One of his all-time classic quotes.
High achievers separate themselves.
You are who you hang with.
Hang with the best.
"Mediocre people don’t like high achievers and high achievers don’t like mediocre people."
3. TWO PAINS
Discipline or Disappointment?
A simple choice.
"There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you’ll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment."
4. THE PRESENT
The great teams live in the present.
They live in the now. They control the controllable.
"What happened yesterday is history. What happens tomorrow is a mystery. What we do today makes a difference."
5. LOSING
The most competitive people hate to lose more than they love to win.
It is a separator.
"I don't like to lose. I don't expect to lose."
6. RESILIENCY
Resilient Teams WIN. They always find a way!
"One thing about championship teams is that they’re resilient. No matter what is thrown at them, no matter how deep the hole, they find a way to bounce back and overcome adversity."
7. FOCUS
Control YOU.
"Eliminate the clutter and all of the things that are going on outside and focus on the things that you can control with how you go about and take care of your business. Take the other team out of the game and make it all about you and what you do."
8. PROCESS
The best coaches and teams are process-oriented.
The process is always the PRIZE.
"Process guarantees success. A good process produces good results."
9. THE HOW
The how matters.
A lot.
Championship teams do not focus on the "what."
They focus on "How" they do things.
"We're not going to talk about what we're going to accomplish. We're going to talk about how we're going to do it."
10. TIMELINESS
Simple, but true.
Showing up on time is about commitment.
Every day.
The little things matter. They lead to big things.
"Be on time, because it shows you care."

"One of our teachers made this board!" said AP @MHawley_3. "Staff write down a brief summary of the positive call so that others can find that student to celebrate them too!"
Heavy screen use might create a vicious cycle for young kids.
New data: the more time 3.5-year-olds spent on tablets, the more angry outbursts they had at age 4.5... and the more they used tablets at 5.5.
Digital soothing is not a substitute for teaching emotion regulation.
Here's another great resource from @SteveWyborney. Imagine the conversations you can have when you ask students how much area is covered by tile? How many ways might students figure it out? https://t.co/ZzrBniUW0K #MTBoS

“Mediocre people don’t like high-achievers — & high-achievers don’t like mediocre people.”
“My goal for spring practice — get the right guys on the bus. Get them in the right seats & get the wrong guys off the bus.”
Coaches: As fall sports kick off, don't forget this! There are kids on your team that need you (and your program) more than you need them! Take care of them!!
How could #DOK address & assess #learningloss?
1) Start with the standard
2) Tier to where #students are
3) Build on #students’ strengths so they can rise to, reach & go beyond the #DOK bar set by the standard.
