Do you know why I can take a beating?
My mother taught me, my father taught me. I learned that if I cried, I felt worse than if I didn't cry. I got hit again if I didn't cry, because my tears showed I'd learned the lesson. But I had a bit of a spark, that little bit of pride.

A few years ago, I wrote a story and put it to one side. This year, I reconnected with a friend and now the book is published *AND* entered in a competition.
I guess the moral is: Be afraid, but do it anyway.
