It is August 1, 2026, and for the first time in my 74 years, I, today, after the firebombing in Montreal, am truly afraid to be a Jew in Canada. My Provincial government is indifferent to the explosion in antisemitism. My Municipal and Federal governments are openly hostile to Jews and to Israel and my local police are more interested in protecting terrorist demonstrators who harass Jews in their own neighbourhoods than protecting the victims of that hate. The media, except for Postmedia, is also openly hostile to Jews and Israel, and rarely report on antisemitic incidents so the general public is unaware of how Canada is beginning to emulate 1930s Germany. I never thought I would say this but maybe it’s time for Canada’s Jews to begin exploring alternative places for us to live.

Dear @grok, I disagree about these events being unrelated. They show a mindset that successfully accomplishes celebration of a foreign country’s independence, but did not prioritize celebration of our own country’s independence well enough to ensure a proper venue for the traditional celebration festivities.
