When Spanish conquistador García López de Cárdenas became the first European to encounter the Grand Canyon in 1540, he and his expedition severely misjudged its scale. From their vantage point, they believed the Colorado River was only about 6 feet (1.8 m) wide, while the towering rock formations—actually around 300 feet (91 m) high—appeared no taller than a man.

When Spanish conquistador García López de Cárdenas became the first recorded European to see the Grand Canyon in 1540, England had yet to establish a single permanent colony in North America—Jamestown would not be founded for another 67 years.

The canyon’s immense scale proved highly deceptive. Cárdenas and his men initially believed the Colorado River was little more than a narrow stream, and that the towering rock formations were only about the height of a man. To get a closer look, three soldiers descended into the canyon. After hours of climbing downward, they realized the “small” rocks were actually massive cliffs, with the river still far below.

According to their report, the men eventually reached a point where they appeared no larger than ants from above, yet still had not reached the river. With their water supplies running low, they were forced to turn back.

Dans le sud de l'Iran, où les températures peuvent atteindre 50°C à l'ombre, les habitants utilisent depuis plus de 2 000 ans un système d'architecture bioclimatique: les badgirs, ou tours à vent. Très répandues dans les régions désertiques du pays, notamment autour de la ville de Yazd, ces structures constituent un véritable système de climatisation naturelle.

Leur fonctionnement est ingénieux: la tour capte le vent en hauteur et l'achemine à l'intérieur du bâtiment. L'air traverse souvent un bassin ou un réservoir d'eau souterrain, ce qui le refroidit davantage par évaporation. En parallèle, l'air chaud est évacué par d'autres ouvertures grâce à l'effet de cheminée.

Grâce à ce procédé entièrement passif, l'intérieur des habitations peut rester étonnamment frais, même lorsque la température extérieure dépasse 45°C, et ce sans recourir à la moindre source d'électricité.

La ciudad de Gaborone, en mitad del desierto, es increíble desde el cielo.

La capital de Botsuana tan sólo cuenta con una población cercana a los 250.000 habitantes.

Concentra la actividad administrativa, financiera y comercial del país.

Fundada en la década de 1960 para convertirse en la nueva capital tras la independencia, Gaborone es una de las capitales más jóvenes de África.

Ha experimentado un crecimiento sostenido impulsado por la estabilidad económica del país y el desarrollo asociado a la industria minera, especialmente la extracción de diamantes.

El núcleo original de la ciudad se edificó desde cero en un tiempo récord de solo tres años. En ese breve período se levantaron el parlamento, los edificios gubernamentales, un hospital, varias escuelas y más de mil viviendas.

Desde el punto de vista urbano, Gaborone presenta una condición interesante.

A primera vista, la ciudad parece poseer un trazado heterogéneo, con barrios, vialidades y áreas de expansión que no responden a una única lógica geométrica dominante.

Sin embargo, al observarla con mayor detalle, es posible identificar que gran parte de la mancha urbana está compuesta por una sucesión de unidades planificadas de menor escala, cada una con su propia organización interna de calles, espacios públicos y equipamientos.

Esta estructura genera una especie de mosaico urbano donde distintos sectores presentan retículas, supermanzanas o configuraciones curvilíneas claramente definidas.

El resultado contrasta con muchas ciudades africanas que crecieron de manera más espontánea u orgánica alrededor de núcleos históricos, ya que en Gaborone la planificación moderna es visible en numerosos fragmentos de la ciudad, otorgándole una identidad urbana singular donde la diversidad formal surge de la suma de múltiples desarrollos planificados.
