Free cash flow (FCF) is the cash a business has left after covering its running costs and reinvesting to maintain operations, basically its "take-home pay". It is the same idea as your salary. After rent, food, and fixing your car so you can still get to work, whatever remains is yours to save or spend freely.

For a company, it's operating cash flow minus capital expenditure. It is relevant because profits can be dressed up with accounting, but cash is much harder to fake. You can have a very strong revenue growth, but nearly all of it could be credit sales (the same way fashion designers lament that they have money, but a bulk of it is “outside”, so they ask you to borrow them money, i.e., ask for short-term working capital funding).

Strong, consistent FCF means real flexibility to pay dividends, cut debt, or weather a downturn, so when assessing a stock, follow the cash, not just the earnings.

When I assess a company, I look at it from a "dividend-paying capacity" rather than "dividends". 🎯
