📄 "Altering rRNA 2'O-methylation pattern during neuronal differentiation is regulated by FMRP"
In a recent article in 'RNA Biology', we describe a previously unrecognised role for Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (FMRP).
🧬 We show that #FMRP regulates 2'O-methylation of ribosomal RNA during neuronal differentiation. By uncovering this new nuclear function in shaping rRNA methylation, we link #ribosome biogenesis to the molecular mechanisms underlying Fragile X Syndrome and related disorders.
🧠 This work, carried out in collaboration with @DBT_inStem, broadens our understanding of ribosome heterogeneity and its role in #brain development.
Importantly, it also provides a framework and resource to further explore how RNA modifications influence neuronal identity and function, paving the way to study their role in #dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions.

This work is a reminder that: 👇
The genetic code is not a rigid, universal lookup table.
RNA decoding depends on context, molecular structure, and cellular machinery we still only partly understand.
Predicting translation from sequence alone remains an open challenge, even decades after sequencing genomes. This is clearly reflected in results from @slavovLab reporting how deviations from the standard genetic code can result in stable and abundant proteins: https://t.co/iOsl3d8RYv
As we push toward deeper mechanistic understanding, this study highlights how much biology still lies beyond the sequence and the simple decoding rules.
