Mind you. The Gaang were supposed to have split up a lot longer than they did. Toph with her parents. Sokka with Hakoda. Aang with the Guru. Katara with the Earth King

So Katara, despite knowing Aang should be busy with the Guru and he has no way of knowing she’s in danger says:

+ The Avatar State is a defence Mechanism. It is not the Avatar. Aang is. Losing access to the Avatar does not stop him from being the Avatar. It makes his job harder, yes.

But perfecting a defence mechanism should not get in the way of his first duty. Protecting people first.

The Avatar can’t fully detach from the world because duty binds them to it. When spiritual needs conflict with protecting others, the Avatar must sacrifice those needs. So Aang leaving the Guru to save Katara isn’t abandoning his duty, it can also be an expression of it.
