Illicit supply now dominates, weakening age checks, product standards, and safety controls. #Australia#IllicitMarket#HealthForAll https://t.co/GSjOq9V9SQ
It gets tiresome when family, friends and even strangers on the street go on at you ‘oh why are you vaping? It’s as bad as smoking you know.’ Mothers are having a cry because their grown sons are vaping. Some GPs acknowledge smoking is dropping but ‘now people are vaping. That’s not good either.’ Or worse, people make fun of you, look at you like you’re an idiot. Anti-nicotine researchers keep getting funding to pump out weak biased op eds and so-called scientific studies. Now they’re running quit vaping trials (at $NZ 1.3+ million minimum per study). 🤦🏻♀️ Meanwhile, 1.1 billion people smoke tobacco worldwide; over 6 million die each year from smoking-related diseases! Helping people who want to stop smoking 🚬 should be the priority, but there’s a new shiny gravy train and lots of gullible philanthropists, policymakers and politicians who are easy to manipulate with scaremongering and old War-On-Drug alarmism =💰💰
Nyashinski’s Showman Residence just redefined what value for money looks like in Kenya.‼️
This wasn’t a concert. It was an experience. Self-produced. Self-funded. Fully Kenyan. 🇰🇪

The European Union’s latest update to its Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), released on 2 April 2026, should have marked a turning point in public health policy.
With smoking still one of the leading causes of preventable death across Europe, this review presented a clear opportunity to support strategies that help people move away from cigarettes.
Instead, the process behind the revision raises serious concerns about transparency, balance, and whether the final outcome will truly serve public health.

Across Europe, a fundamental tension is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The debate over tobacco harm reduction (THR), once centred on the scientific evidence, is now shifting into something more consequential: whether policymakers are willing to act on that evidence.

We recently warned that Commissioner @OliverVarhelyi was spreading misinformation about smoke-free products.
Now, 23 top European experts have sent an open letter to President @vonderleyen, backed by evidence from the @RCPhysicians, Germany's @bfren , and the @US_FDA, dismantling his claims point by point.
"Supporters of the approach frequently point to countries where smoking has declined rapidly alongside the availability of alternative nicotine products. Sweden is often cited as a leading example. Thanks largely to widespread use of snus and nicotine pouches, Sweden is close to becoming the first country in Europe to achieve “smoke-free” status, defined as fewer than 5% of adults smoking."

The EU Health Commissioner, @OliverVarhelyi keeps erroneously claiming that smoke-free products are "as harmful" as cigarettes.

“I am driven by deep despair and intense frustration that the opportunity to avoid millions of premature deaths and tens of millions of years of human suffering is being squandered by a kind of purity cult."

In a new piece for @Filtermag_org, @Clive_Bates highlights how tobacco harm reduction isn’t just theory — it’s saving lives:
“Recent analysis suggests snus use in Sweden avoids about 3,000 smoking-related deaths every year. Yet since 1992, over 20 million EU citizens have died from smoking-related disease.”
What if harm reduction had been taken more seriously?
