I am a prospective student applying to the Chemical Engineering MS/PhD program at [the University of Obi]. I meet all the admission requirements and consider myself a competitive applicant with the needed academic preparation, skill set, and research interests.

Unfortunately, the current financial realities in my home country [Ghana] make it very difficult for me to afford the application fee. The sharp depreciation of the [Cedi] against the U.S. dollar has significantly reduced my financial capacity ($100 = 1,195 GH₵), and the fee represents a substantial barrier to submitting my application despite my strong academic readiness.

A FEW THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS:

✅ Check the university or department’s admissions webpage; it usually contains information on how to qualify for an application fee waiver.

✅ If a university states that waivers are available for economically disadvantaged students or based on financial need, that’s a green light, go ahead and send that email.

✅ If a university’s admissions webpage says, “No Application Fee Waiver,” consider reaching out directly to your program director or coordinator to request one.

✅ Don’t be discouraged if a university website says there’s no application fee waiver for international students. Sometimes departments have their own waivers, but you wouldn’t know until you ask.

→ For instance, one of the universities I applied to said they don’t offer application fee waivers, but my department waived mine. These decisions are often at the department’s discretion.

✅ You can also obtain a fee waiver by attending virtual open house events organized by universities or specific programs. I used this strategy frequently and found it very effective.

🔴DISADVANTAGE OF APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS:

→ Availability of application fee waiver increases the number of applications by hundreds if not thousands, which then makes the admission pool very competitive and decreases an applicant's chances of getting admission and funding.

→ If you can, save some money and pay for some application fees.
