@Wachewee Lets say you born in the late 1800/early 1900, in the Mhofu Clan, they named you Mukova and yo brother was Chakauya. The colonial gvt would give you names Simon Mukova and Peter Chakauya. Your kids would then use Mukova as your surname while your brother's kids used Chakauya!

@Wachewee Unfortunately, most young people know surnames but not totem and clan history and lineage. As people moved away from village life to urban areas we lost our culture/identity. Add western education system, globalisation & modern lifestyles and clearly we lost identity 😭

@Wachewee Most of these names Simon, Peter were forced by registration authorities or encouraged or required by missionaries (a wing of the colonial system). Colonialists had difficulties understanding/pronouncing local names and so they gave English first names, stripping away identity
