There is something deeply heartbreaking about how Kenya treats the very people who care for our lives.

Every day, contract nurses at Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital walk into a high-risk mental health facility knowing they may be assaulted by patients, exposed to trauma, and forced to carry emotional burdens that many of us will never understand. They do it because they chose to serve.

Yet after more than five years of continuous service since June 2021, they are still trapped in endless three-month contracts, living from renewal to renewal, never knowing whether they will still have a job tomorrow.

They perform the same duties as Permanent and Pensionable nurses.

They wear the same uniform.

They work the same shifts.

They care for the same patients. But when it comes to pay, allowances, job security, and dignity, they are treated as though their sacrifice is worth less.

How do we ask nurses to dedicate their lives to healing others while their own families live in uncertainty?

How do we expect them to give hope to patients when their own future is left hanging every three months?

This is not just an employment dispute. It is a moral failure.

The @MOH_Kenya cannot continue looking away while these nurses carry Kenya's mental healthcare system on their shoulders without the protection, recognition, and fairness they have earned.

Equal work deserves equal pay. Years of faithful service deserve permanent employment. Commitment deserves dignity.

I call upon the Ministry of Health, the Public Service Commission, and the leadership of Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital to act without further delay.

Absorb these nurses into Permanent and Pensionable terms, pay the allowances they are entitled to, recognize their years of service, and guarantee that none of them will face victimization for peacefully demanding justice.

A nation that abandons its nurses is a nation that abandons its own humanity.

These nurses have stood by Kenya. It is time for Kenya to stand by them.
