NUDO MP Vetaruhe Kandorozu has tabled a notice of motion calling for a discussion in Parliament on Namibia’s immigration and work permit system.
In the motion, Kandorozu asks that the National Assembly review the granting of work permits and visas to foreign nationals for jobs that Namibians can do.
The motion also calls for a reconsideration of the employment of foreign nationals in diamond polishing, mining and long-distance transportation, as well as skills-transfer programmes.
Kandorozu further suggests that immigration procedures at border posts, the issuance of work permits by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, and the enforcement of laws governing foreign nationals without the required documentation to work should be investigated by the National Assembly.
He also suggests that the matter be referred to the relevant parliamentary committee to liaise with stakeholders and present recommendations to the National Assembly on measures to improve local employment opportunities.
