Troubling visuals from the Eastern #Himalayan state of #Sikkim in #India, floods caused by a sudden cloud burst & subsequent discharge from Chungthang dam. Around 28 dams are planned on the #Teesta river alone. As the #climatecrisis worsens, each dam will serve to amplify risk.

Hydro projects are typically designed based on historic rainfall data, say for the last 50-100 years. But climate change and other factors are causing extreme events, like this GLOF. All dams, particularly those in the fragile Himalayas need a serious scientific reassessment.
