This has been coming for a while. I was invited to Morocco circa 2018/19 when the government was launching their financial district. I have travelled there more than 5 times since.
It was clear then, and it is now, that the government of Morocco had a clear plan & every intention of executing on it.
When I told my peers in the SA capital market scene about this, they thought I was hallucinating.
By 2023, Morocco had built a solid financial market system. And they have accelerated their pace of development.
South Africa has to realise that it doesn't have a monopoly on opportunities or talent.
Time is not waiting for South Africa to get its act together.
And while we squabble over legacy issues of how our economy is distributed, the rest of the continent is building for the future.
I am sure Morocco is not perfect.
But the point is, South Africa desperately needs leaders who can imagine and build a more vibrant economy.
We dont have a resources problem.
We dont have an opportunities problem.
We have a leadership problem.
