My 5 Principles for Long-Term Success in Indian Markets
Most investors chase narratives.
Serious capital compounds through structure.
After studying cycles, flows, and behaviour, here’s what consistently works:
1. Cycle > Story
Macro liquidity and earnings cycles matter more than headlines.
2. Allocation > Stock Picking
Right sector and theme exposure drives most returns.
3. Behaviour > Intelligence
Drawdown control and position sizing outperform IQ.
4. Cash Is Strategic
Optionality during extremes creates asymmetric upside.
5. Process > Prediction
Repeatable frameworks beat bold forecasts.
No hype. No shortcuts.
Compounding rewards discipline.
Gold (24K) is at ₹15,131 per gram today.
In 2014, it was around ₹2,800 per gram.
A 12-year CAGR of ~15%.
The "boring" asset your grandmother bought silently outperformed most equity portfolios over the same period.
Sometimes the best thesis is the oldest one.
"Experience is what you got when you didn't get what you wanted."
— Howard Marks
Most investing wisdom is just compressed regret.
The investor who knows when to do nothing usually had to learn it the expensive way.
Three things that destroy a salaried investor's portfolio more than any market crash:
Buying a ULIP because a friend "joined the company"
Stopping SIPs in a downturn to "wait it out"
Treating their EPF as if it doesn't exist
The damage is silent. The compounding loss is not.
A friend asked me last week:
"Markets are down. Should I stop my SIP?"
I asked him one question back:
"When you started this SIP three years ago, what did you tell yourself you'd do if markets fell?"
Long pause.
"I said I'd buy more."
The plan you make in calm is the plan you abandon in volatility.
That gap is where most wealth is lost.
The rupee is at ~95 vs. the dollar.
In Jan 2025, it was at ~85.
In Jan 2020, it was at ~71.
In Jan 2010, it was at ~46.
If you have a child whose education you're saving for in USD — the cost is not what tuition will be.
It's tuition × the rupee on that day.
Currency risk is a goal-planning input. Not an afterthought.
Naval Ravikant once wrote:
"Play long-term games with long-term people."
The same applies to your money.
A 5-year SIP started in a panic and stopped in another panic isn't a long-term game.
It's two short-term emotional decisions wearing a long-term costume.
Gold is up ~15.5% YTD in 2026. Nifty 50 is down ~9% from January's peak.
Most Indian portfolios I observe have: 60-70% equity, 20-25% debt, 5-10% gold, 0% cash buffer.
Allocation isn't a one-time decision you made in 2021.
It's a relationship you maintain.
Three questions worth sitting with this week:
1. What's the maximum drawdown my current portfolio could tolerate before I'd panic?
2. Is my actual allocation still aligned with that tolerance?
3. If markets fell another 15% from here, what would I do?
Answer in calm. Don't wait for volatility to ask.
A 50% loss needs a 100% gain to break even.
Most investors know this sentence.
Almost none of them have run the math on what it actually means for their own portfolio.
Here's the version that should be on every Indian investor's wall in May 2026.
🧵
Howard Marks framed it well:
"If we avoid the losers, the winners take care of themselves."
Indian markets in May 2026 are not testing your stock-picking.
They're testing whether you have a process for how much you own of each thing.
That second question is the harder one.
Your portfolio is down 14%. Nifty is down 8.5%.
That extra 5.5% isn't bad luck.
It's beta you didn't know you were paying for.
Mid-caps are down 18%. Small-caps 24%. Check what you actually own — not what the AMC marketing said you owned.
"The riskiest moment is when you feel you're right." — Howard Marks
In January, the consensus was 28,000 by March.
Nifty is at 24,119.
Conviction without humility is just leverage in disguise.
Nifty is 8.5% below its January peak.
SIPs in March hit a record ₹32,000 crore.
Same investors who panicked at 26,000 are now buying calmly at 24,000.
The market didn't get rational. The investor did.
