And once again: @SBComicsFair will continue! This year is going to be incredible and if you want to continue following what I do, that's the account to follow.
@Yolo_Tengo thank you. the hardest aspect is there is so little work/roles in this area, that sort of invariably means having to carve my space continually i.e. 'build your own' which is exhausting
There's a glut of reasons ShortBox is closing, but it's not due to a lack of readership. The reason we've been able to exist is due to the fantastic -and still growing- support of our readership. The audience for complex, weird, intelligent, visually interesting comics is there
The main reason SB is closing (and it took me a while to realise) is that I'm not interested in running a business. I don't want to do marketing, social media, conventions, admin, customer service, print prep, and on and on. I just want to do editorial curation and direction.
Last year, cartoonists took in over ยฃ300k in sales at @SBComicsFair -in just 1 month. It's not an issue of a lack of interest or readership, but general infrastructure and resources (i.e. there not being any) in comics almost across the board. It is, or becomes, unsustainable
@KejeraL It was well-intentioned for sure, but it's too easy to scapegoat 'support' in the form of readership. Comics lacks support on almost every level, it's a systemic issue
