Tragic Shoøting Outside LDS Meetinghouse in Salt Lake City Leaves 2 Dead, 6 Injured
Salt Lake City, Utah — January 7, 2026
A deadly shøoting erupted in the parking lot outside a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Wednesday evening, claiming the lives of two people and injuring six others during or immediately after a memorial service.
The incident occurred around 7:35 p.m. at 660 N. Redwood Road in Salt Lake City’s Jordan Meadows neighborhood. Police responded to reports of gunfire, finding eight adult victims in total. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene or shortly after, while three were listed in critical condition. The conditions of the remaining three injured were unknown, as some were transported to hospitals in private vehicles.
Salt Lake City Police Department officials described the shoøting as stemming from an altercation, emphasizing that it was not a random attack and not believed to be a targeted attack against the religious community.
“All victims are adults,” police stated during updates to the media. Authorities also noted that the large multi-agency response — involving numerous law enforcement units — was triggered by initial 911 calls reporting an “active shøoter” situation.
As of late Wednesday night, no suspects were in custody, and investigators were actively searching for those responsible, including a possible suspect vehicle last seen heading north on Redwood Road.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement expressing grief: “We are aware of a serious incident that occurred outside a Church meetinghouse at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City tonight as a memorial service was being held in the chapel. We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind.”
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall also responded, saying, “This tragedy never should have happened,” and expressing confidence in the police investigation.
The area around Redwood Road remained closed for several hours as police processed the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
Police do not believe this shooting was random. Two people were killed and at least three others are injured after a fatal shooting at a celebration of life. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall now offering condolences.
