We are deeply concerned by reported cuts to the Nature Restoration Fund, a vital source of funding for nature conservation right across Scotland, which was just beginning to make real positive impacts for nature in local communities.

We know that Scotland’s nature is in trouble, with 1 in 9 species at risk of extinction. Pulling funding now in the face of extreme climate events here in Scotland and of noticeable declines in biodiversity, is making the job of adapting to ongoing environmental change even more challenging. Recent polling shows that 8 out of 10 people in Scotland have noticed harm to the environment in their local area and we know that a healthy natural environment is vital to our wellbeing as individuals and communities, as well as absolutely critical in the fight against climate change.

Our #ScotlandLovesNature campaign is calling on @scotgov to set legally binding targets for nature recovery in the upcoming Programme for Government through a Natural Environment Bill, put funding in place to restore nature and help communities protect and restore their local environment. The proposed cuts to the Nature Restoration Fund makes nature recovery, which is fundamental for our immediate and long term future, even more difficult. We urgently encourage ministers to rethink these counter-productive proposals.
