ニール役をお願いしたルカ・マリネッリさん。イタリア映画「皆はこう呼んだ、鋼鉄ジーク」の敵役(ジンガロ)で、彼の存在を初めて知りました。2020年日本公開のジャック・ロンドンの自伝的映画「マーティン・エデン」で、彼の演技力に惚れ込みました。素晴らしい映画だったので、公開時の宣伝協力をさせて貰いました。すると日本の配給会社の担当から、連絡が入りました。ルカさんが僕のコメントを読んだらしく、想いを”KOJIMA-SAN“に直接伝えたいので連絡先が欲しいと。ほどなく、ルカさんからメールが来ました。

「自分はメタルギアで育った。あなたの大ファンです。自分の主演映画を観てくれて非常に光栄です。このことをあなたに直接伝えたかった」と。

コロナ禍、僕はDS2のキャスティングを順番に進めていました。ニールはDS1のクリフに変わる重要な役。マッツを越える程の配役じゃないとファンは納得しません。

ルカさんが出ているネトフリの「オールドガード」も観ました。そこで、やはりニール役はルカさんしかいない。そう決意し、彼にオファーのメールを送りました。ちょうどルカさんは「帰れない山(2022)」の撮影中でチベット山中にいたようです。嘘か本当か分かりませんが、彼は撮影現場の山からちょうど降りてきたとこらしく、僕からの着信を見る前に偶然、僕のことを考えていたらしいのです。「これはスピリチャルな体験だった」と。

その後、ホームに戻ったルカさんにZOOMコール。DS2のピッチを行い、出演を快諾して貰いました。また相手役となるルーシー役を探しているというと、奥さんでもある女優(映画監督)のアリッサさんを紹介してくれました。まだコロナ禍の大変な時期にスキャン、ピーキャプを行いましたが、彼らの現場での演技は素晴らしかったです。デジタル化されたトレーラーの一部を観ても、それはわかると思います。台本もまだない時期に出演を快諾してくれたルカさん達には感謝しかないです。
