Somebody tried to bring 1,500 tonnes of soybean into JNPT last week on papers that said it came from Niger. Niger is landlocked. It has almost no soybean to speak of, never mind an export trade. The only reason to write "Niger" on a manifest is the duty-free window we hand the least-developed countries. Customs caught it because the Niger numbers suddenly spiked, which is the tell every single time.

Here's what actually bothers me. The fraud isn't the story, it's the symptom. We import most of our edible oil. When a supply chain is that exposed, every loophole quietly turns into a business model. Nobody bothers faking a country of origin on something we make at home in surplus. They do it on the stuff we can't live without and still can't grow enough of.

Fix the import dependency and the paperwork games dry up on their own. We keep chasing the forgers. The forgers are just reading our balance sheet.
