Drier farms in N. England are still showing impacts of the dry spell pulling down average growth rates, but in other regions, grass growth is significantly above the 4yr average growth rate of 41.7 kg DM/ha/day. @TheAHDB @HybuCigCymru @qmscotland

After a dip last week, average CP has risen to 17.2% (DM), however the energy value of grass is again below previous years figures. If animal performance is below target some additional dietary energy may be beneficial. @TheAHDB @HybuCigCymru @qmscotland

Along with the permanent BGS staff, the BGS Presidential team and the trustees make sure that the Society is run in line with its constitution and Charity Commission guidance. They provide direction and advice to the CEO on projects and the overall management of the society.

Heavy showers with significant rainfall run-off see soils staying dry and grass growth rates below average as a result. Protecting AFCs is still key - select a sacrifice field for supplementary feeding @TheAHDB @HybuCigCymru @qmscotland

BGS Members: Membership of @BritishGrass is open to anyone with an interest in grass and forage production and utilisation. We currently have around 400 full BGS members: 21% are from the research sector, 32% from the commercial sector, and 47% are farmers.

What we do – Summer Meeting
Hopefully you got a feel for the Summer Meeting from our tweets earlier this week. The 3-day meeting is held in a different location each year and is organised by a local society (or societies) with help and guidance from BGS.

What we do – Spring Farm Walks
Over recent years, in association with LIC and AHDB, we have held a number of Spring Farm Walks. This year we visited Graham Parks (now BGS President Elect) and Pam Clarke at their farm near Macclesfield.

Grass growth rates are forecast to meet and exceed the LT av. The challenge will be when to remove extra supplement, skip paddocks and remove surplus grass. Removing paddocks will help address poor quality paddocks. Apply fertiliser again in line with a nutrient management plan.

Grass quality has fallen in response to moisture stress. With most areas now seeing some showers this should improve as growth rates lift. Adjust allocations to match demand as growth rates are changing rapidly to maximise grass utilisation @TheAHDB @HybuCigCymru @qmscotland
