I started my career a few years ago, but long before that I had already amassed a reputation as the guy to go to if you wanted to build a website. Mark you, I could not write a single line of code then. How? WordPress.

I loved tinkering about with WordPress and WPEngine, and I became kinda good at it. A client, usually through referalls, would approach me and I'd ask for a downpayment, say 15k.

With this money I'd buy a domain plus hosting, usually 4k thereabouts. I knew the guys who worked at Kenya Web Experts by name, seeing that I'd buy domain every other week or so and call to sweettalk them so they could elevate my privileges.

The hosting would run on your good old cPanel. This would come with unlimted email addresses which could be configured to show up right in the clents gmail, a feature they really liked.

Then Chrome started requiring SSL and who are we to fork cash for that? If you're a hacker you know you'd rather waste two weeks engineerng something that would have cost you 5 dollars if you'd decided to pay for it.

The first thing I'd do would be to install WordPress. Then I'd go to the Pirate Bay (I'm not proud of my Monkey D. Luffy days), steal some premium themes, tinker with the code a bit to make it look original, then install it.

Next it would just be confgurations. I created websites for law firms, NGOs, e-commerce sites, personalites, etc.

I charged between 30k to 40k for a week of work. It wasn't much (work wasn't very frequent), but at least it was an honest living.

I am now a senior web developer, yet I still find myself going back to my good old no-code friend, WordPress. Wisdom is knowing which web apps need building from the ground up and which websites can be quickly cobbled with WordPress.

Of course, there's a whole other world of Headless WordPress. My very first job in tech, I told them I knew WordPress, only for me to be met with lots of PHP that traumatized me to a point I'm still going to therapy. But that's a story for a nother day. PHP does tend to do that to you sometimes.

But I'd encourage young techies, and looking to freelance, to seriously take a look a WordPress. Afterall, it powers 70% of the web for a reason.
