For those of us who treasure our multi party democracy, it is a wonderful thing to see the conversation move from whether or not the opposition exists, to a debate about the crowds at the rallies of this same opposition that was thought to be non existent just 5 short months ago.

No matter what side of the political divide one belongs to, it cannot be denied that what the opposition has been able to achieve in terms of campaigns, in this short period, considering the constraints they have faced in the recent past, is nothing short of phenomenal.

They deserve commendation for keeping this election competitive and by implication, for keeping our democracy alive. I cannot say the same for those candidates who have withdrawn from their electoral races under nebulous and suspicious circumstances - they are inimical to our democracy.

The recent days and weeks have shown that, notwithstanding the huge impediments placed in the path of multi partisan politics in Zambia in the past three years, Zambia and Zambians are determined to remain a multi party democracy.

In the past three years, we often heard retorts of ‘there’s no opposition’ and those of us who warned that ‘the opposition are the people’ became near lone voices. I remember saying to some ruling party pundits in the last one year, that “ the real problem is not that there is no opposition, but, that for the first time in the history of Zambia, the ruling party does not know the Presidential opponent two years to an election”, I was laughed off. There is a reason why even despotic regimes allow a semblance of real opposition party activity - to prevent opposition organisation becoming vague until the last minute. Exactly what happened here.

No matter what the result of the elections on 13th August is, Zambia shall emerge a stronger multi party democracy than it has been in the past 3 years - and we must keep it that way. No leader or party should ever bet on the absence of an opposition in Zambia. We will always have a strong opposition because we are diverse and a section of the population, no matter how large or small, will always be the opposition. The leader they choose, is but their figure head, for the moment.

The Oasis Forum delivered a letter to Govt in which they expressed their unwillingness to proceed with talks. Govt should have just acknowledged receipt of the letter and published it. Nothing more.

Now, by announcing that it has “suspended” talks rather than simply reporting the Oasis Forum’s position, Govt has unwittingly taken responsibility for the breakdown in talks, a public narrative that favours the Oasis Forum, that they were ready to engage but Govt chose not to proceed.

This subtly shifts public perception, making it seem like the talks broke down due to Govt action rather than the Oasis Forum’s stance.

This is a classic example of framing in communication. The wording of an announcement can influence who is seen as responsible for an outcome, even if the facts themselves haven’t changed.
