Just finished the second of Pierre Lemaitre’s trilogy, All Human Wisdom. It leaves me head scratching that he isn’t universally known, as he writes brilliantly and effortlessly. Couldn’t recommend it more.
@cognacproperty @chrisstead Am i ok to be ambivalent? I don’t think it is good for football to have these extraordinarily wealthy backers but this has been happening for years and years, without any proper governance, oversight and regulation. And unlike many, I don’t think the Glazers have been that bad.
Just finished Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton. Excellent. Has A Prayer for Owen Meaney feel to it, with that creeping sense of inevitability. Recommended.
Just discovered the french writer Pierre Lemaitre, and read the first in a trilogy, The Great Swindle. Set in Paris post WW1, it is so good. Brilliant characterisation with a growing inevitability in the story. So recommended.
@chrisstead My defence on Davie is that he is trying to protect the BBC on the issue of impartiality as the govt were setting out some very explicit threats on funding
@ShelaghFogarty Do you think Rishi Sunak is sitting there questioning how his team have somehow managed (in football parlance) to score quite such a dramatic electoral own goal?
@cognacproperty And raises an important point about politicians use of language, which is still being missed. “Invasion”, “overwhelmed”, “millions of refugees potentially coming to lur shores”. It is propagandist to create fear. So Lineker is right…and so is Basil Fawlty…”don’t mention….”
Just finished this on holiday. Wasn’t sure what to expect as I thought it may be too fantastical for my liking, but was brilliant, imaginative and intelligent. Highly recommended
Grateful to have just read Still Life by Sarah Winman. Didn’t want it to end. Every sentence beautiful. A rich cast of characters. A parrot. And a Florence backdrop. You couldn’t ask for more
@jodipicoult An awkward Christmas morning. My present to my wife was Nineteen Minutes. Hee present to me - Nineteen Minutes. Both of us thought we were being really clever!
@cognacproperty I would still prefer to have the right decision to be honest. It is way too slow I agree. And there is always the counter celebration for a disallowed goal!
