No, this isn't an illustration of a distant exoplanet; it’s Saturn 🪐. Its unusual color is due to the fact that the image was captured in the infrared range.

At the bottom, you can see a small sphere—that’s Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Incidentally, it possesses an atmosphere one and a half times denser than Earth’s. The image was taken by the Gemini North Observatory in Hawaii.

That evening, six planets will appear lined up across the sky in a rare event astronomers call a “planetary parade.”

The lineup includes:
Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Four of them, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn should be visible to the naked eye shortly after sunset.
Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a small telescope.

This happens because the planets orbit the Sun on roughly the same flat plane. From Earth, they occasionally appear to line up along that path, creating the illusion of a straight row across the sky.

Best viewing:
• About 30 minutes after sunset
• Look low toward the western sky
• Clear, dark skies will give the best view

Events with this many visible planets at once are not common.

The next similar alignment won’t occur for many years.
