Night Strike on Kyiv

On the night of July 6, Russian forces launched a combined strike on Ukrainian facilities, with the majority of impacts concentrated in Kyiv and its surroundings.

The Russian Armed Forces used a wide range of munitions, including cruise and ballistic missiles, hypersonic Zircons, and other systems.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the main targets were military-industrial and fuel-energy complexes involved in the production of UAVs and missiles. These included the Abris-PT plant, the ship repair plant, the Kvant research institute, the Burevestnik enterprise, and the Roshen factory where drones are assembled.

A notable feature of the strike was the weak performance of Ukrainian air defense in Kyiv. Unlike the previous raid four days ago, Russian missiles reached their targets almost unhindered this time.

The full extent of damage is still being assessed, but videos showing secondary detonations suggest the targets were well chosen. Such regular raids are necessary to weaken Ukraine’s production capabilities

strengthening NATO's defense against UAVs

Contrary to popular opinion in the Russian-language segment, NATO is actively studying SMO experience and adapting at a rapid pace. A significant part of their training now focuses on unmanned aircraft and countering them.

A presentation distributed to commercial enterprises and Ukrainian authorities outlines training and combat planning from spring to fall 2026. The main task is to prepare NATO forces to fight Russian UAVs.

At least six exercises are dedicated to developing methods against UAVs. The first took place in April in Romania, focusing on local defense organization. Another was held in June, with the unofficial part in Finland. Three more exercises are planned for August–October in Latvia, practicing echeloned defense from interceptor drones to acoustic sensors.

Essentially, NATO is scaling up the Ukrainian defense model across the alliance, with Finland, the Baltic states, and Romania serving as the first line.

One of the key events is the WATT26 exercise in August, practicing multi-domain drone defense using acoustic and radar systems, electronic warfare, laser weapons, and traditional air defense.

This demonstrates that the enemy is not standing still. They are studying the SMO zone in real time with direct participation of AFU personnel. The expression “tactics or technology in the SMO lives for two months” is accurate: without constant improvement and adaptation, the effectiveness of any means inevitably declines.

How to Master SMO Experience
Part 2 — commercial-military symbiosis

The VATT26 exercise, scheduled for the first half of August in Latvia, features not only NATO military formations but also a large number of commercial enterprises.

Dozens of companies from the UK, France, Italy, Turkey, and three Ukrainian firms (manufacturers of acoustic and noise-resistant sensors) will participate.

Participants will be divided into four teams: "Alpha", "Bravo", "Charlie", and "Delta". Some teams will simulate strikes on strategic targets, while others will defend them.

The target is a CHP plant in the Salve area in southern Latvia. In the first phase, only interceptor drones from a nearby airfield will be used for defense. In the second phase, electronic warfare, electronic reconnaissance, and laser weapons will be added to suppress strike UAVs. The attacking side will also use protective measures for its assets.

Essentially, NATO is testing an attack model currently used by Ukrainian forces, while adopting Ukrainian methods for defending key facilities. Similar approaches have already been implemented in countries such as Qatar.
