The Great Betrayal of Bretton Woods

The IMF and World Bank were born with a noble mission: to promote development, strengthen economies, and safeguard global financial stability.

Eighty years later, the world is carrying $353 trillion of debt, over 300% of global GDP.

Somewhere along the way, they confused financing with reforming.

Instead of forcing governments to build capable institutions, broaden tax bases, reform state-owned enterprises, strengthen courts, and improve governance, they repeatedly refinanced failure.

Debt became the cure for problems caused by bad governance.

The result is a world drowning in debt, burdened by structurally higher interest rates, and increasingly borrowing to service yesterday’s borrowing.

The greatest failure of Bretton Woods was not creating too much debt. It was failing to create better governments.

I don't think people understand the gravity of the situation linked to the strikes on oil depots in Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Gulf states, and beyond.

This is a picture of Moscow now. Covered in thick black toxic clouds of smoke, raining oil on 14 million people with cancerous polluted air entering every lung. People breathing this. Animals breathing this. Trees breathing this. A humanitarian and environmental catastrophe.

Bombing oil depots has serious environmental and humanitarian consequences. Hazardous "black rain" and "acidic rain" could pose serious health risks as toxic pollutants spread in the air, and contaminated the water—raise concerns of "wider regional pollution exposure", with the long-term effects of pollutants, affect respiratory health and contaminate water, that will affect people for years.

Every bomb dropped on an oil depots is a time bomb for the people and the planet.

This has moved beyond geopolitics. It's a crime against humanity.

Those claiming total U.S. has surrendered fundamentally misunderstand what has happened.

Trump is many things, but he is a smart man. I have always believed he respects power and adjusts quickly when facts change.

His gamble was ambitious: strengthen America’s position in the global energy equation at a time when traditional leverage is diminishing.

But once it became clear that Iran could not be decisively defeated and that a prolonged conflict carried unacceptable economic, geopolitical, and energy-market risks for the United States itself, he did what successful dealmakers do: he recalculated.

That is pragmatism.

The objective has now shifted from coercion to commerce. Rather than bear the costs of an endless confrontation, Washington is seeking to capture the benefits of normalization through energy, investment, infrastructure, and commercial agreements.

Strong leaders know when to escalate. Smart leaders know when to make a deal.

Poverty in Pakistan today is higher than in a decade. Unemployment is higher than in 2 decades. Share of investment over the last three years is lower than in 6 decades. Inflation in the last 4 years has been higher than even in our history. Also the first time we have not even crossed 4% GDP growth in 4 years and first time that after four years per capita income is lower than before. This is the record of the last four years of Mian Shehbaz Sharif’s government.

This budget makes some corrections from the Dar budget of 23/24 like putting surcharge on salary income or putting super tax on all companies including exporters. But the highest bracket on salary is still 35% and because of inflation-induced salary increase people are still paying a lot more. Salaried class paid Rs 600 bn this year and after a “relief” of Rs 50 bn will pay Rs 700 bn next year. Super tax on 8% still remains.

Does this budget change our government priorities? Will it bring about growth? Will it bring more investment? Will it reduce unemployment or poverty? As a Pakistani I hope very much that happens. But as an economist, I don’t think this budget is what was needed at this time and will not bring about improvement in our economy.

What we have painfully learned from the past is that just as PPP and development in Sindh are incompatible, similarly Mian Shehbaz Sharif’s statist economic vision and economic growth are incompatible.

وزیراعظم صاحب! عالمی منڈی میں تیل کی قیمتیں تو کافی نیچے آ چکی ہیں۔ اب اپ سے گزارش ہے کہ اپنے سینے پر رکھا ہوا وہ بڑا سا پتھر ذرا ہٹا دیں آپ بھی تھی گئے ہونگے اور مہربانی فرما کر پٹرول میں صرف 100 روپے فی لیٹر کا م ریلیف دے دیں۔ خیر ہے، ہم زیادہ نہیں مانگتے، بس اتنا ہی کافی ہے کہ عوام کو بھی کبھی سستی کا زمانہ یاد آ جائے۔

Israel started massive bombing campaign against Lebanon as soon as a potential peace deal was announced. They’re never going to let us live in peace. They are never going to be satisfied.

They’re insatiable fanatics, who want endless war because they think God promised that land to them 3,000 years ago. They’re the religious and nationalist fundamentalists we should have been warned about.

That’s so fucking obvious. Just look at a map!! Are the Palestinians occupying the Israelis, or the other way around? Are the Lebanese invading Israel, or the other way around? You would have to be both blind and deeply stupid to not see the reality at this point.

I’m furious at our national media. They all lied in unison for decades to trick us into supporting and funding the terrorists.
