If you are starting to understand of what the issues are...
That's a start.
Now...
Educate yourself.
Listen to us.
Amplify our voices.
Respect our identities.
Be our allies.
Do not overstep boundaries.
It's that simple.
The fact is, disabled people do not give a hoot about what they received. If anything, they are happy for them.
It's how the videos are presented and how they contribute to stereotypes and misconceptions, which paints a broad picture of disabled people.
That's the harmful part.
A big reason for why they cannot afford hearing aids is because a lot of insurance companies will not pay for them. Many deaf adults and parents of deaf children do not qualify for government programs to assist with the costs due to their income. But that's another discussion.
Ways to be an ally to the Deaf community:
- learn sign language!! @theaslapp
- try to learn from Deaf teachers (if none in your area, that’s understandable)
- stand with us when we say Deaf babies need sign language
- understand how the medical framework is harmful to us
This list can go on and on.
If Deaf people are angry at hearing creators on socials, so be it.
“Angry Deaf person” is simply someone who tried to educate too many ignorant ppl in a short time.
Tired Deaf Person is more accurate. We are on repeat everyday.
Ways to be an ally to Deaf, cont’d:
- if you are making a product that will “help” deaf people, ask yourself:
- do I have a deaf partner or co-founder or co-conspirator?
- how do I really understand the deaf experience?
- do I sign?
Deaf consultants = nice try
@PatchDonal Once had audiologist say to me, ASL/sign language will soon be obsolete bcuz of hearing aids/cochlear implants. AN AUDIOLOGIST who knows the tech doesn't cure deafness & that tech doesn't work for all deaf. I say provide ALL tools (+ASL) and Let them choose which they want/need.
Maybe not *unhinged* but it has always been a dream of mine to have a YA anthology absolutely filled with unabashedly joyful, interconnected Disabled stories, written by Disabled authors 👀
@elonmusk@SignedInk would like to raise funds to create a scholarship deaf writers/illustrators can use, whether it be for hearing aids, living expenses so they have time to write/illustrate, or writing/illustrating education to further their careers. Will you help?
