When it feels like a pendulum is swinging back to certain forms of content, itโs probably moreso the case that universal truths about viewership are just being rediscovered.
Even if they are always there, they feel fresh again just because people naturally forget about the past when itโs not shown to them in the present.
In fact, perhaps it is the natural decay of human memory that lets things feel novel again.
A pendulum is not a function of novelty, but of collective forgetting.
However, there is one difference: the โnewโ thing is still influenced by relatively recent things, and the recent things themselves keep on changing. So the โoldโ thing that resurfaces is indeed a new version of old.
In other words, weโre not actually just repeating the past.
So conceptually itโs more accurate to say: Weโre forgetting it existed. And then through our new ways of seeing the world, we rediscover forgotten pasts, but transform them through the new ways in which we see the world.
This is very abstract so to make it simpler:
Itโs like if no-oneโs made a pavlova for decades. But society in 2067 is now super into honey for some reason. You find an old paper recipe in your grandmaโs folder of collected snippets she cut out of the magazine, browned with age. You therefore decide to make a honey pavlova, and post it to YouTube. It now explodes in popularity, as the world rediscovers the delight that is a nice pavlova โ but because they really freaking love honey now too, it works for them.
So, I think content has the same properties.
In this sense, a pendulum never swings back entirely to its original place.
An actionable way to take advantage of this as a YouTuber early, is to understand what made past things good, and to create content that is an evolution of that for modern audience.
