This isn’t meant to be braggadocios, more so appreciative; But there’s a certain feeling I get being able to take my son to a toy store, the grocery store, or most places and not have to tell him no to everything.
I grew up in a low income household, where I ate spaghetti six nights a week and got a frozen TV dinner on Sunday. (Kid Cuisine, with the mac n cheese and brownie, the best kind.)
Once a month, my mother would save enough that we could order whatever the special Little Caesar’s had at the time. I was grateful for what I had, but it definitely hurt not being able to have things that my friends or other kids at school had. Never having good stationary, or a cool backpack, or new school clothes.
My wife also grew up right as Estonia regained it’s independence. They had to build an economy from nothing; so even if you were a fortunate family making a high income, the price of goods still often outweighed however much you were making. She tells me all the time about how she remembers every single time she had McDonald’s growing up. Kids used to have their birthdays there because of how expensive it was.
So for the two of us, there’s a certain feeling that we get in being able to give those things to our son whenever we see fit. I don’t take it for granted. I know that what we have is incredibly fortunate.
As someone who didn’t think they’d even make it this long, it’s a good feeling to have, knowing that you’re in a position to provide your kid(s) with joys and privileges you couldn’t afford in your time. I think seeing my son experience these things is like a small part of myself sharing that experience, vicariously.
Maybe this is what people meant when they said your kids become your whole world. Maybe my world now is trying fill the void in myself by offering it up to him as a learning experience. I still want to share the stories with him, though. I want him to be humble about what he has and will have. I want him to share the mentality that we aren’t owed being more fortunate than our neighbor. I want to teach him to always help where you can.
Happiness is nothing if it isn’t shared with others; at least for me. I’m just glad I get to share it with him from now on.
Excuse me, who designed the Frankfurt airport?? What a genius idea to connect a portion of the terminal just by bus??
Flight was still at the gate when they told me they stopped boarding 🫠
I guess I'll just play some MTG Arena at the airport and try not to fall asleep 🥱
I traveled to Austin for work and they gave me a Mazda rental that only has km/h and shows European time. Sure, I feel at home, but I am also doing constant math in my head to understand how fast I should be driving.
