In 2023, I had an employee.
But she wasn’t just an employee.
She was my friend. 💔😢
She was always sick.
Headaches.
Stomach pains.
Excuses that sounded endless.
Always late.
Sometimes no work at all.
I was torn.
Between empathy and practicality.
Between being a boss and being a human.
I thought maybe bringing her into the office would change things.
It didn’t. One day, I called her in.
I asked softly, “Are you okay?”
Silence.
She always wore a mavin.
That day, she removed it.
Then she pulled a chunk of her hair. I froze.
My throat tightened. Tears began to fall before she even spoke. 😢
“Coach… I have cancer.
It started to spread.
I have kids to feed.
I cannot afford chemo.
I’m sorry… I failed you.
You are right to fire me. I won’t take it personal.”
I broke. 💔😭
It wasn’t my employee sitting in front of me.
It was my friend.
My friend with stage 3 cancer.
My friend who couldn’t even afford a chance at life.
I told her to rest. And even though I was struggling myself, I gave her a small stipend each month. Because she needed it more than I did.
Then one day… Her number lit up my phone.
But the voice wasn’t hers.… Mom wants to see you. Please come immediately.” I dropped everything. When I got there—
What I saw still haunts me.
A pale, bony body. Eyes sunken. Breath heavy.
Pain written on every inch of her.
She looked at me, gathered what little strength she had left…
“Haaaai… co… coach.
It’s time. Thank you for taking a chance on me.
You made my last days memorable.
Please… don’t forget my children.”
And then…
She took her last breath. 😭😭😭
I cried. Not like a boss. Not like a coach.
But like a friend losing another friend. 💔
Today marks the day she died in 2023.
Rest in peace, Maureen 🕊️💔😢😭
