Zaira Wasim can dog-whistle Islamists after a young Muslim child for celebrating Indian Independence Day, but how dare the media use Zaira’s image, which is already in the public domain, in its reports, because she’s a niqabi now. We are not living in an Islamic republic. There is no general law in India that says a hijabi’s or niqabi’s face cannot be shown simply because she has chosen to cover it. If you make extremist comments of public significance, the media is going to cover you and use publicly available images to identify you. It cannot be a one-way street. If you are free to put your opinions out there, others are free to identify you as the person expressing them, especially when those comments can potentially put others at risk.

And no, nobody gives a shit about Zaira Wasim’s personal choices. What matters is what she chose to say publicly when she left the film industry, framing it as something contrary to Islam. She knew perfectly well that such rhetoric could stigmatise other Muslim women from Kashmir who want to choose artistic professions. She hasn’t changed at all; if anything, she has only become more regressive. And honestly, what values do you expect from someone whose own mother was publicly seen cheering for Pakistan during cricket matches on Facebook? If that is the worldview you choose to embrace, then don’t demand that the rest of us accommodate it. You cannot put extremist views into the public domain, knowing full well that they can get others marked by terrorists, and then hide behind a black tent yourself. Coward.

These Kashmiri hegemons are hell-bent on turning Kashmir into Kohistan, where Islamists tortured and eventually murdered five young women simply for being seen clapping in a video while a little boy danced to a local song. They lead very colourful, double lives themselves, while idealising extremism for others.

These Shariah-style diktats from these enemies of freedom, who are subverting our democracy from within, should be pushed back in time. Or we are doomed.
