“Alcune ferite al cuore probabilmente non guariranno mai. Ma non possiamo semplicemente sederci a fissare le nostre ferite per sempre.”
Haruki Murakami - 1Q84
The Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland is known for its unique history. In the early 1600s, a group of Swiss soldiers served in the French Royal Household.
In August 1792, about 1,000 of these Swiss guards were tasked with protecting King Louis VI. But when revolutionaries attacked the King's home, most of the Swiss guards were killed.
One of the officers, Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen, was not there that day because he was on leave in Lucerne. He was deeply saddened by the death of his fellow soldiers and decided to build a monument in their memory.
Famous Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the monument, which features a large dying lion carved from sandstone. It overlooks a pond on the edge of the old town.
The monument was finished in a little over a year and revealed in 1821.
Nowadays, over 1.4 million tourists visit the Lion Monument each year. The monument's emotional impact is well summarized by Mark Twain, who called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
