Businessman Richard Allen exposed a Channel Islands export-import VAT scam used by major retailers, saving taxpayers billions. Despite his detailed evidence, HMRC suppressed it, letting the illegal tax evasion continue for six more years.

Later, they sought his help to stop a similar Chinese import scheme. Instead of rewarding him, HMRC nearly bankrupted him by pursuing £125,000 in legal costs from his campaign, including fees for barristers employed to block his freedom of information requests.

I’ll say one thing. If pensioners who receive above a certain amount of income won’t get winter fuel allowance, maybe MPs shouldn’t get their energy expenses either. A bit like
