I’m pleased I could make it to at least some of @TheVeganSociety’s 2024 Research Day. Below is @LboroIRPH’s @DanOwainBreeze presenting a fascinating paper on a ‘prehistory’ of veganism.
Vegan Geographies: Spaces Beyond Violence, Ethics Beyond Speciesism edited by Paul Hodge, Andrew McGregor, @AnarchistGeog, @DrOphelieVeron, & @DrRichardJWhite is now available: https://t.co/bLHCIcoDNZ

I'm forever amused by the weird experiences 19th century vegetarians made due to some of their wild beliefs.

Sharing a bit of my research again.
In 1889, Dr. August Aderholdt reported a story from years back, when he was in Paris. At the time, he had been convinced that his vegetarianism would protect him from catching any kind of disease. So he sat children on his lap who had smallpox
To his surprise, a short time later, he developed a fever, which accompanied a smallpox infection. While he was at the sickbed, he left the door to the garden wide open. This led to cats, rats, and sparrows entering the room and stealing his bread.
Na terça-feira, dia 26 de Março, Maria Saari, da Faculty of Education & Psychology, University of Oullu e do Human-Animal Studies Hub, ICS-ULisboa, vai estar no @life_ics, a apresentar “Transforming climate change education through multispecies justice”.
The latest issue of The Vegan magazine, from @TheVeganSociety, features a ‘deep dive’ piece on the ethics of grey squirrel ‘management’ I cowrote with @Dr_SVG. While we oppose killing greys, we recognise that this isn’t a straightforward issue.
I'm very happy to share that my third book, provisionally called Animals, State, and Utopia: Robert Nozick's Animal Ethics, is now forthcoming with Oxford University Press. If all goes according to plan, it will be released in 2025.
I'm pleased to sign the New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness: 1) Our best science suggests some animals are conscious. 2) Many other animals realistically might be conscious. 3) It's irresponsible to ignore (the chance of) consciousness in decisions impacting animals.
