My spirit was raised so much today as I spent time engaging with young people – including a video call with Tyla, our Grammy-winning performer and songwriter who celebrated her 22nd birthday less than a week ago. I shared with her my pride and that of the nation at her achievement of the Grammy for Best African Music Performance.

Well done again, Tyla.

I was equally excited to be part of a pre-State of the Nation Address gathering of young people at Belhar, Cape Town, where we reflected on and celebrated the impact of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention which has opened doors for hundreds of thousands of young people during the three years of the programme.

I recognised that while we have made progress, we need to – and will – do more to invest in our nation’s youth.

One of the questions put to me concerned government support for the creative industries in our country.

From our music and theatre stages to film sets, bookstores, art studios and galleries and heritage centres, the creations of South Africans inspire us to ensure that our Mzansi Golden Economy benefits creative South Africans and our broader economy.

1. Just in case someone wants to deliberately twist what the SG said about the ANC's involvement in the Nkandla debacle, let us proactively explain both what he said and what he meant in context.

2. The SG made general statements about how the ANC "defended" former President JZ when he was accused of corruption and other official misconduct connected with Nkandla.

2. First, we must agree that it was the duty of the organization to fully understand the facts upon which the opposition parties base their corruption accusations and charges that followed before it could act.

3. As such, the ANC, as the SG so eloquently argued, was duty bound to enpanel parliamentary structures to investigate the serious accusations.

4. Such a move was precisely to protect the ANC President from being unfairly overrun by the malevolent opposition.

5. What is important to expose here is that by affording the President due process of law, which was his right under our constitution, the ANC was protecting its president.

6. The SG fairly reported that the matter was ventilated in the courts, as it was supposed to be, and the chips fell where the Constitutional Court said they should fall.

7. I admit that ultimately, as the SG also accepted, that it became clear through the courts that enormous state resources were misappropriated to achieve the renovations in Nkandla.

8. Once the apex court pronounced both its findings and its ruling on the matter, not a squeak came out of the ANC in defense of its president.

9. The matter was resolved, and the then president had to cough up the misappropriated funds.

10. The ANC, as a political party, did not use its resources to satisfy any part of the court judgment against the former president.

11. Other than members of the opposition and sworn enemies of the ANC, anyone who understood or interpreted the SG's remarks yesterday in Mpumalanga, as an admission that the ANC assisted, abetted, aided or attempted to assist, abet or aid the former president in defrauding the government, must have his/her head checked.

12. The remarks must also be understood as political rally rhetoric and polemics.

13. The SG wished to underscore the importance of supporting the current president and ensuring that he too is not overrun by ANC enemies who are engaged in baseless, untested, or unproven claims.

14. He emphasized that HE President Ramaphosa is, as did former president JZ during the Nkandla debacle, entitled to due process of the law.

15. The SG admirably stood firm on universal principles: ie should the courts find HE President CR guilty of any misconduct related to Phala-Phala, the ANC stands ready to act fearlessly.
