Cons created 2 classes of Canadians by denying citizenship to children born abroad to Canadian parents.
My amendments to C-3 would restore their rights and make our laws charter-compliant.
Citizenship is a birthright — not a privilege.

@JennyKwanBC Thank you Jenny Kwan for your sustained commitment to helping Lost Canadians. Your voice was much missed at the #cimm deliberations yesterday.
I’m deeply disappointed that Conservatives and Bloc MPs teamed up to pass amendments to Bill C-3 — the Lost Canadians bill — that undermine its very purpose: to right historic wrongs faced by Lost Canadians and their families. #cdnpoli#LostCanadians
Deeply disappointed that @CPC_HQ and especially @MichelleRempel have chosen to characterize Bill C-3 (An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act) as a "Chain Migration" bill
Citizenship for children of Canadians is not Immigration. Embarrassed to see MPs don't understand the difference
“We’ve heard concerns that Bill C-3 could mean hundreds of thousands of new citizens,. Based on that evidence, we anticipate volumes in the tens of thousands over time and we do not expect any surge.”

Today, Minister Diab introduced legislation that would extend citizenship by descent beyond the first generation in a way that is inclusive and protects the value of Canadian citizenship.
Bill C-3 would
• automatically give Canadian citizenship to any person who would be a citizen today were it not for the first-generation limit or certain outdated provisions of previous citizenship legislation
• establish a new framework for citizenship by descent going forward that would allow for access to citizenship beyond the first generation based on a Canadian parent’s substantial connection to Canada

Among the bills being stalled in Parliament is #C71 - the Citizenship Act. It has a short fuse and must be passed by December 19 or the floodgates will open for multiple generations of children born abroad with no ties to Canada.
