Five Eyes intelligence agencies (US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) issued an unprecedented joint warning in June 2026 that Chinese military intelligence is aggressively using online job platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Upworkto recruit individuals with access to sensitive government information.

The Recruitment Method
Chinese operatives create fake identities posing as HR consultants or recruiters for legitimate-looking "cover companies" to target prime candidates, including:
•Security clearance holders and military personnel, particularly those in the Indo-Pacific.
•Defense, foreign affairs, and intelligence specialists.
•Academics, journalists, and think tank employees with peripheral access to government data.
Operational Playbook
The espionage scheme follows a methodical five-step process:
1Initial Contact: Fake recruiters post job ads for analyst positions on professional networking sites.
2Screening: Virtual interviews are conducted to assess the candidate's access to confidential government contacts or military activities.
3Testing: Candidates are asked to produce "trial reports" on topics like China’s bilateral relations or defense policy to establish willingness and capability.
4Escalation: Recruits are pressured to provide increasingly privileged or non-public information, with conversations moving to encrypted messaging platforms.
5Payment: Individuals are paid $ hundreds to thousandsper report via third-party services like PayPal, Wise, or cryptocurrency.
Official Response and Denials
The joint bulletin, titled "Safeguarding Our Secrets," warns that even unclassified information can be pieced together to damage national security.

Agencies have already identified individuals involved in these activities, leading to criminal prosecutions and security clearance revocations.

In response, Beijing has rejected the allegations, calling them "pure fabrication and malicious slander" and accusing the Five Eyes alliance of conducting its own global espionage activities.
