Before I was Transformers fan or even heard the name Optimus Prime, I heard his voice. Peter Cullen was the voice I heard on Toonami and so many other great TV shows without even knowing it. By the time I learned what transformers was I was already familiar with his tone and cadence.

Peter Cullen was hands down one of my biggest inspirations for voice acting, my favorite voice for Optimus, and above all else someone who just seemed to have a lot of wisdom.

I'll never forget the the first time I saw him talk about how he came up with the voice for Optimus Prime. How it was based off of his brother Larry, a Vietnam war veteran. Right before Peter went to audition for the role, his brother told him something that influenced the way he voiced the character.

"Peter, if you're going to be a leader, be strong enough to be gentle." These words however, didn't just mean something to Peter, they resonated with me as well. It was like I had been handed a key that unlocked a new level of understanding of how to do the voice, the right way.

My entire perspective on how I had done Optimus Prime's voice changed, and I think that's why in the last couple of years my impersonation of him has improved. More importantly, I understood why this character meant something to Mr. Cullen.

I have never had the chance to meet him, but I'd be lying if I said this man didn't have an impact on my life. Call it para social, but sometimes the people that have the greatest impact on you are the ones you never have the privilege of meeting.

This isn't about losing a guy who voiced robots, designed to sell toys to kids. This is the loss of soul who impacted so many creators who dreamed they too could also be strong enough to be gentle.

Rest in peace Mr. Cullen and thank you for the lessons.

@Rezztro Those are just descending quarters notes. Extremely common in music, and fairly common for villains. I'd say this is just a coincidence. There are similarities like this in music all the time, and usually don't mean anything. Not to mention, the notes are different in both themes
