Some patients come and go. Others leave paw prints on your heart.

Meet Ginger😍

Ginger was a beautiful German Shepherd whose owner never wanted to breed.
She was the only female dog in a house with three males, so the goal was simple; prevent pregnancy.

One day, her caregiver noticed she had come into heat and called us. My boss visited and tried to stop the heat medically, but unknown to everyone, Ginger was already pregnant.

A few weeks later, another call came in.

Ginger had become weak, quiet, and had stopped eating. We examined her and performed an ultrasound. She was pregnant.

The owner was furious. He blamed everyone involved but made one thing very clear:

“I don’t care about the puppies. I just want my dog back alive.”

Because we didn’t know exactly when she’d been mated, Ginger stayed with us while we monitored her. Days passed. Everything suggested she should have delivered already, but she didn’t.

We had no choice but to perform an emergency Caesarean section.

Seven puppies were delivered. Sadly, one was already dead and that was the one obstructing the birth canal.
We all hoped the worst was behind us.

It wasn’t.

Within 24 hours, we noticed the puppies constantly nursing and pulling around the surgical site. The tension on the incision was preventing it from healing properly. 2 days later, fluid began leaking from the wound. The fluid volume kept increasinh by the hour.

It was another emergency.

We had to sedate Ginger again, re-suture the incision, and this time separate the puppies from her so we could focus entirely on saving her life. They had to be hand-fed while all our attention shifted to Ginger.

The days that followed were some of the hardest.

Every day was intensive care. She was on fluids, medications, and constant monitoring. There were days when it felt like we were making progress, and others when it felt like we were losing the battle. At some point, we almost gave up hope.

But I couldn’t.

There was something about Ginger that made me believe she deserved one more chance.

Then, slowly, she began to turn the corner.

She started eating. The wound looked healthier. Day after day, she became stronger until she was finally well enough to go home. We eventually lost some of the puppies, but Ginger survived and that was what mattered most to her owner.

The day she was discharged, I couldn’t help but take a few pictures with her. I was genuinely happy to see her leave the clinic alive.

I thought that was the end of Ginger’s story.

I was wrong.

A while later, I returned to the clinic after a housecall and noticed about five German Shepherds in the kennels behind the clinic. As I walked closer, every single one of them started barking at me…

Except one.

One dog just stood there, wagging her tail with so much excitement.

I paused.

Then I ran upstairs and asked, “Is Ginger one of the dogs downstairs?”

“Yes,” they replied.

I hurried back down, opened her kennel, and what happened next is something I’ll never forget.

She jumped on me with pure excitement, wagging her tail like she had been waiting for me. It was as though she remembered every injection, every dressing change, every long day we spent fighting to keep her alive.

That moment reminded me that while our patients may not understand every procedure we perform, they often remember how we made them feel.

In my few years of practice, I’ve managed many interesting cases, but Ginger’s story is one I’ll carry with me for a very long time.

She reminded me why I chose this profession.

Not every victory is measured by a successful surgery.

Sometimes, the greatest reward is seeing a life you fought for come running back to you.

Many people think goats see all humans the same way, but that’s far from the truth.

Research has shown that goats can recognize familiar human faces and even remember them for long periods. They don’t just identify people by smell or voice, they can distinguish individuals by their facial features.

Goats use a combination of:

2)Body language
3)Voice
4)Smell

Together, these cues help them identify people they know and differentiate them from strangers.

If a person regularly feeds, handles, or cares for a goat calmly, the animal is more likely to seek out that person in the future.

Kidney disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs, especially as they get older.

Around 1 in 10 dogs will develop kidney disease at some point in their lives.
In senior dogs (7 years and older), the prevalence is much higher, with studies suggesting 10–20% or more may have some degree of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
It is one of the leading causes of illness and death in older dogs.

Dogs may develop acute kidney injury after ingesting:
-Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
-Certain medications (such as some NSAIDs)
-Grapes and raisins
-Lilies (more common in cats, but some exposures may affect dogs)
-Heavy metals

Humans aren’t the only ones who can develop diabetes, dogs and cats can too!

Many people are surprised to learn that pets can suffer from diabetes, a condition where the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose).

In healthy animals, the pancreas produces a hormone called insulin, which helps move glucose from the bloodstream into the body’s cells to be used for energy.
In diabetic pets, there is either too little insulin or the body doesn’t respond to insulin properly, causing blood sugar levels to remain too high.

What causes diabetes in pets?
The exact cause varies, but several factors can increase a pet’s risk:

📍Obesity – Excess body fat makes it harder for the body to respond to insulin, especially in cats.
📍 Age – Diabetes is more common in middle-aged and older dogs and cats.
📍Genetics – Some breeds are more prone to developing diabetes.
📍Hormonal disorders – Certain diseases that affect hormone levels can interfere with insulin.
📍Pancreatic disease – Damage or inflammation of the pancreas can reduce insulin production.
📍Long-term use of steroid medications – Prolonged use of corticosteroids can increase the risk, particularly in susceptible animals.

‘Perfect. Time to patrol the house.’

But that staring?
It’s usually because they’re observing movement.

Cats are obsessed with tiny movements:

📌your fingers twitching,
📌your eyes moving during sleep,
📌even sounds you don’t notice.

To them, you suddenly becoming still for hours is actually strange behavior.

Some cats stare because they’re:
checking if you’re awake,waiting for food,protecting territory, or simply being curious little weirdos.

And honestly…
cats study humans the same way humans study cats.

So while you think you own a cat…
your cat might actually be researching YOU.
