Ogun State governorship aspirant Iyabo Obasanjo has suspended her bid for the 2027 election after Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate.

Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, made the announcement in a statement signed on Monday, April 13, 2026. She said the decision followed Yayi’s adoption at a caucus meeting of the party held in Abeokuta.

In her statement, Iyabo Obasanjo said:
“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.

“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration.

“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey. Together, we move forward with patience, strength and hope.”

Today, I led a high-level delegation from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on an extensive on-the-spot assessment tour of communities severely affected by the recurring ocean surge along the Lekki coastline.

Alongside the Director of the NEMA Lagos State Office, Mr. Muhammad Olatunde, and his team, we visited multiple coastal communities to see firsthand the extensive destruction caused by the surge, including collapsed homes, destruction of livelihoods and properties, erosion of ancestral lands, and the displacement of several families. Many of our residents shared heartbreaking accounts of their experiences and made passionate appeals for urgent government intervention.

What I witnessed today is deeply concerning. The scale of the devastation requires urgent, strategic, and multi-agency collaboration. I have charged the NEMA team to treat this crisis as a top priority and begin the process of designing sustainable solutions that will protect our people from further destruction and safeguard lives, livelihoods, and critical community assets.

Today's visit marks an important step toward mobilizing stronger support for shoreline protection, emergency relief, and long-term solutions to coastal erosion in Lekki LCDA. As Chairman, I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to ensuring that all relevant authorities work together to deliver the intervention and protection our people urgently need.
