Months ago, during our very first pilot study, we listened to two women in Bwaise describe the realities they live with every day: silted drainage channels, inadequate waste collection services, and piles of garbage left along drainage paths, only to be washed back into the channels when it rains.

Why are women at the center of our consultations?
Because these voices speak with the urgency of mothers who wake in the middle of the night to protect their children from rising floodwaters. They are the ones who sit beside hospital beds when a child develops malaria or other waterborne illnesses linked to poor drainage and stagnant water. They understand the true cost of neglected infrastructure not in statistics, but in lived experience.

We are shifting the narrative by ensuring that women do not simply describe the problem they are shaping the solutions. Their lived experiences are not anecdotes; they are essential knowledge for building a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Kampala.

If you look closely, you’ll see that the water is now flowing at a much higher speed because this drainage channel has been desilted and unclogged.
This is exactly what we set out to achieve:

We have officially begun the desilting and unclogging of drainage channels in Bwaise Katoogo, starting with the main clogged channel that stretches from Kawempe–Kazo to Bwaise. This marks the beginning of our community led effort to restore proper water flow, reduce flooding and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.
