It’s exhibition night at Sisu! Our students are sharing the results of their “Intersectionality” project. We created art pieces to represent how different aspects of our identities overlap to create unique life experiences, and solutions to issues marginalized communities face 🗣
School at Sisu is HIGHLY PERSONALIZED AND DIFFERENTIATED. Today some students are conducting online research, some are watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi, some are prototyping their art products, and others are crafting interview questions. Voice, choice, and diverse entry points ✌️
Young people often exhibit their greatest genius when adults aren’t present. We (adults) have to learn how to not allow our energy to be exerted at the expense of theirs. #HipHopEd
What did we do in school today? We played Wall Ball & met a dog at the park, finished the movie Food Inc & discussed our thoughts on industrialized agriculture, and began drawing maps of food in our students’ home neighborhoods. Tomorrow? Comparison shopping at 3 stores #PBL#edu
In PBL we bring chunks of marble for students to sculpt into their vision. And even then, sometimes it’s more like bringing directions to a quarry & some digging tools 🤷♂️ The more rigid and microplanned you are, the more fragile & narrowly inclusive you are. Take the reins off!!
Agree so hard. They create a checklist mentality & automatically exclude awesome divergent ideas/work. Shouldn’t it be possible for us to simply look at work, give holistic feedback focused on a few goals/criteria, and offer S the autonomy & respect to lead via their reflection?
Our students loved seeing the @hightechhigh exhibition tonight! We were stealing ideas, scoping out ways to curate work, and @amyccallahan & @RWalkTheWalk saw their beloved former students 😭😭 Always a mecca of inspiration & wonderful surprises 🙏 See y’all at #deeperlearning
“Schools should be places where students are excited to be, not just forced to be.” Loving these #thisibelieve poems from our TAP students! @hthgse#shareyourlearning
It’s exhibition week! That means our students are perfecting their products through final critique and iteration. We’re creating art pieces to highlight issues in marginalized identity communities, including quotes from activists and statistics that draw attention to inequities.
Every kid I know is more engaged by walking around outside and using the real world as a learning lab, than sitting down doing a worksheet! via @edutopia https://t.co/lDuZbl7vTS
Breakfast at Sisu: chilaquiles and nopales. One of the biggest opportunities we have as a boarding school is to make & break bread with each other. Building relationships and enjoying the sweet nectar of life is just as important as any academic content or project product ❤️🔥😎
Today, students are writing and critiquing their essays with a focus on effective hooks and strong thesis statements in their intro paragraph. We’re also beginning to prototype our art pieces, which will highlight individuals from marginalized communities making an impact!
Started today at @sisuacademy w a walk around the neighborhood to enjoy post-rain smells & trees & skies. Absolutely beautiful. But a student roasted me: “Ugh... what is it with old people and trees?” 😂😂 But another S said: “I thought it would be boring but it’s actually great”
How does your school begin the day? We started with Baby Shark, Kitty Cat High-Five, and a cosmic dance quest. Get the blood pumping and activate our energy to help us learn during classrooms as we continue our project work :-)
