Multiple social media accounts operated from India have circulated a video claiming that Islamist groups in Bangladesh tied up a Hindu student named Abhi Das and threw him alive into a river. The posts further claim that he was a student of Jagannath University.

Verification shows that this claim is false.
In reality, the video shows an incident from June last year, in which the sack-wrapped body of a young man named Jony Sarkar was recovered from a canal in Narayanganj. The footage has been falsely circulated in connection with the current claim. Moreover, Abhi was not a student of Jagannath University; he was a fourth-year honours student in the Management Department at Naogaon Government College.
No credible evidence has been found in reliable sources to support the claim that Abhi was killed by Islamist groups. Additionally, a letter written by Abhi’s father to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station states that the father believes his son died by suicide after jumping into the water out of emotional distress. In the letter, he wrote:
“I believe that my son died by jumping into the water out of resentment toward us. I, along with any of my relatives, have no complain against anyone regarding my son’s death. Neither I nor any member of my family will file any case or pursue any legal action against anyone in this matter.”

A reverse image search shows that an earlier version of the video was published on June 17 last year, where it was described as footage of the recovery of a sack-wrapped body in Narayanganj.

On June 19, Prothom Alo published a report titled “Parents kill drug-addicted son after enduring abuse: Police,” which provides detailed information about the incident.

During the investigation, police found the involvement of the victim’s father, Karuna Sarkar, in the killing. CCTV footage later confirmed his involvement. During interrogation, he stated that he killed his son in his sleep after being driven to desperation by the abuse caused by his drug-addicted son.
Therefore, an old and unrelated video has been circulated as footage of the body of Hindu youth Abhi recovered recently, which is misleading.
