discord got caught up in age verification laws (UK online safety act, australia's under-16 ban) so they started collecting government IDs and face scans from users to prove their age

they outsourced the manual ID review to a third party called 5CA

in october 2025 a group called Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters hit 5CA and walked away with ~1.5TB of data. claimed over 2.1 million government ID photos from 5.5 million users

discord confirmed at least 70,000 people had their passport/driver's license photos exposed

5CA then denied they ever handled IDs and denied being hacked. cool

this is what happens when you force platforms to hoard sensitive biometric data just to let people use an app
