The Thought:It is the simplest teaching to memorize, but the hardest to live. If we were forced to flee our homes due to violence, poverty, or persecution, how would we want to be treated?

Would we want to be met with razor wire and hostility? Or with compassion and a chance for safety? Christ commands us to use radical empathy as our compass. We must treat the immigrant family today exactly how we would pray to be treated if the roles were reversed.

We often try to draw circles around who deserves our help, just like the legal expert who questioned Jesus. We want to know who we don't have to love.
Jesus answered with a story about a Samaritan—a foreigner and a historic enemy of his people—who was the only one to show mercy. Jesus teaches us that our "neighbor" isn't just someone who looks like us, lives near us, or shares our citizenship. Our neighbor is anyone in need who crosses our path. Boundaries do not limit God's love, and they shouldn't limit ours.

Christ does not just ask us to tolerate the stranger; He identifies himself as the stranger. When we look at immigrants facing deportation or rejection, Jesus tells us we are actually looking at Him.

Christian hospitality isn’t about politics or borders; it is about recognizing the image of God in everyone. If we claim to follow Christ, we cannot turn a blind eye to the "stranger" in our midst. How we treat them is the true measure of our faith.

Got up early and got crockpot going. An hour later my wife runs in and says, "It smells good! It's ready!". I tell her no, it needs to cook for at least six hours and she begins to yell at me because her nose tells her it is ready. Understand, she doesn't cook.
