Another way to see the same rule is:

(4+4)×4=8×4=32(4 + 4) \times 4 = 8 \times 4 = 32(4+4)×4=8×4=32
(7+7)×7=14×7=98(7 + 7) \times 7 = 14 \times 7 = 98(7+7)×7=14×7=98
Both formulations are algebraically equivalent when the two top numbers are the same:

(a+a)×a=2a2=a2+a2(a+a)\times a = 2a^2 = a^2+a^2(a+a)×a=2a2=a2+a2

So the answer is 98.
